Ese 43% que obtuvo la postulación del Presidente Pinochet en el plebiscito del 5 de octubre de 1988 se lo quisiera la inmensa mayoría de los gobernantes del planeta. Por cierto, ya lo desearía como piso el Presidente Piñera, con apenas seis meses de ejercicio del poder; o Bachelet, al concluir pocos meses atrás sus cortos cuatro años de mandato. Y no se nos olvide que Pinochet obtuvo ese porcentaje después de 15 años de gobierno.
Algunos dicen que quienes votamos que Sí, en ese momento miramos hacia atrás y, aún así, apoyamos al mismo sujeto que supuestamente había cometido graves violaciones a los derechos humanos.
En efecto, para la izquierda de todos los tiempos, esos 3.111.875 ciudadanos que votamos que Sí éramos unos sujetos perversos, cómplices activos del mal o, al menos, completamente obnubilados respecto del pasado reciente. Y resulta que cuando leemos eso, recordamos todo el cúmulo de agresiones que descargó por décadas esa misma izquierda -hoy disfrazada de liberalismo socialista- contra los que consideraba sus enemigos. Fue en los años 60 y a comienzos de los 70, cuando los marxistas plantearon toda la vida social en términos de buenos y malos. Ellos eran los buenos, nosotros los malos. Unos cuantos miles de documentos avalan esta afirmación, y no hay textos que la contradigan.
El 5 de octubre de 1988, tres millones cien mil chilenos fuimos de nuevo perversos -lo acaba de afirmar un destacado columnista- porque estimamos que 15 años antes las Fuerzas Armadas de Chile habían reaccionado con la debida fortaleza ante la agresión de un proyecto totalitario y porque veíamos con enorme preocupación el futuro del país. Se nos considera perversos al votar que Sí, ya que sabíamos que las Fuerzas Armadas habían sido preparadas durante los gobiernos democráticos -sí, bajo Frei Montalva y Allende también- para enfrentar la subversión y el terrorismo, y por eso habíamos apoyado el modo en que reaccionaron derribando el gobierno de Allende.
Bueno, pero importa poco la sesgada visión de quienes no estudian la historia, sino que solo difunden consignas. Por eso, aboquémonos a dilucidar quiénes eran esos más de tres millones de chilenos, hoy vilipendiados por haber votado que Sí.
En primer lugar, eran, en su inmensa mayoría, personas de los sectores medios y bajos (a no ser que alguien piense que había más de 3 millones de “ricos” por esos años). Eran, simplemente, personas sencillas, que habían encontrado la paz que les había quitado la Unidad Popular. No hacía falta pedirles más fundamentación para su voto.
Pero, además, muchísimas de esas personas declaraban encontrarse felices de vivir en libertad, de haberse librado de una Cuba chilena. Claro, eso para los teóricos del 2018, para aquellos que jamás han experimentado las amarguras del totalitarismo en acción, suena a invento de circunstancia. Sí, pero sin duda no les gustaría apreciar el “invento de circunstancia” en sus propias carnes.
Además -y por las mismas razones-, esos más de tres millones de personas rechazaban la violencia desatada con que el Partido Comunista intentaba derribar al régimen y no le veían buen futuro alguno a una coalición que no lo incluía, pero que sí le guiñaba el ojo. 
Y así fue a la larga: primero se practicó con los comunistas la inclusión y después se acordó con ellos la coalición. Los resultados están a la vista.
Por último, los votantes del Sí eran personas dispuestas a reconocer los abusos, pero después de leer el texto completo (esta no es cuestión de contexto), o sea, sin frases tachadas por la decisión unánime de la izquierda. Eran personas conscientes de que el que provoca una guerra sabe que se expone a los abusos y los asume de antemano.
